Riva del Garda

In Riva del Garda the water is deeper blue, the sunlight is more intense and the air, invigorated by the nearby mountains is clearer, making it uniquely charming. The rich Mediterranean vegetation of olive-lemon-palm and laurel trees cheer the changing of the season up creating a picturesque view. The deep blue water of the lake and the marvelous majesty of the Dolomites of Brenta give birth to a breathtaking sight of Riva del Garda. The ensemble of history, culture, art, sport, nature, together with the warm, modern and complex welcoming structure and the highly professional holiday accommodation satisfying each tourist requests, are the ingredients for an ideal and unforgettable holiday. The historical center facing the lake under the sheer slopes of Mount Rocchetta, reveals its Medieval structure. The square in front of the Church Santa Maria Assunta, surrounded by lots of shops and several activities, is the meeting point for many citizens of Riva del Garda. Worth a visit are: the apse of the Church of St. Rocco and St. Vigilio  (1512) which was partly destroyed during the Great War, and Via Fiume a commercial street of the medieval village, ideal to go shopping in an unreal atmosphere of ancient times. The Rocca, fortress on the lakeshore, surrounded by ancient palaces with fresco and flowered trees in summer, is a very romantic place, from which it is possible to see the building lying at the foot of the Monte Rocchetta: the Hydroelectric Power Station Ponale. Wandering in the green vegetation of this mountain, the foot – path leads to the Bastione, a Venetian fortress, dominating the town and the lake. Walking further for about 1 hour one can reach the alpine hut Capanna sociale di S. Barbara and close to it the small Church of Santa Barbara (625 m). From this place one can enjoy a wonderful view of the town and the lake. On the opposite side, eastwards, there is Monte Brione, another place to go by foot or by mountain – bikes, following the famous “Peace – path”, protecting the San Nicolò harbor, used as a shelter for pleasure-boats and as a base for the diving club. From here the promenade with its wide beach of white pebbles leads through small bays and bridges, parks, gardens and small lakes populated by fish, ducks, geese and magnificent swans to Villino Campi. Not far from Riva is Arco, winter resort, and Varone, the oldest quarter of Riva, where one can visit the waterfalls and the ancient Pernone Church, today deconsecrated and congress center for theater season. Riva del Garda can boast a long and consolidate windsurfing and sailing tradition, thanks to the strong winds; in fact there are several schools offering courses to both beginners and advancers. But Riva is an ideal place for sport- lovers since it’s close t Val di Ledro (with its rivers and creeks for adventurous experiences canyoning), to Arco (with its natural mountain walls for climbing), to the several Vie ferrate – Iron paths (above Santa Barbara; Monte Colodri above Arco).
